Research for evaluation.

• Vladimir Propp (1969) developed a character theory for studying media texts and productions, which indicates that there were 7 broad character types in the 100 tales he analysed, which could be applied to other media:
• The villain (struggles against the hero)
• The donor (prepares the hero or gives the hero some magical object)
• The (magical) helper (helps the hero in the quest)
• The princess (person the hero marries, often sought for during the narrative)
• Her father
• The dispatcher (character who makes the lack known and sends the hero off)
• The hero or victim/seeker hero, reacts to the donor, weds the princess

Goodwins theory claims that there are two types of video performance based or narrative based. Within the narrative based videos there are three sub genres. The first being disjunctive is which the video may contradict the lyrics however there is a informal, random narrative consistently through the video.

The second being illustrative is which the music video displays and illustrates the lyrics very literally therefore turning the music into a visual. The final theme being a video amplification in which a concept is amplified to an extreme.

In reference to this theory my video is disjunctive as it does not follow the words of the lyrics, due to the fact we created our own narrative and based it on a different context, however with in the video there is a consistent narrative of confusion, distortion and fear.

My video contradicts Todorovs theory of equilibrium. In this he expresses that in the beginning of the video here will be equilibrium and tranquility, in the middle of the video there will be disequilibrium however in the end peace will be restored. The end of the video there is a resolution of equilibrium as the girl is transported back into the real world.

Barthes' Enigma Code is a theory that suggests a text portrays a mystery to draw an audience in, pose questions and this develops interest. In our case our music video is based heavily on enigma as lots of questions could be asked (as features previously on my blog) therefore our video conforms to his theory of enigma. He also has a theory of semiotics which is based on denotations (what we actually see) and connotations ( the symbolic meaning). He said that the audience interpret things through their own subjective perspective which is known as the enigma code. The semic code on the other hand is how actions. clothes and behavior take on a meaning within culture. The majority of videos conform to the semic code as they will have meanings which have been interjected by society. Therefore through my video has the art house theme that would be linked to the indie genre.
